Montreal, Fall 1974

My dad went on a business trip to Montreal and Quebec in fall 1974 and took the family along. It was my first trip out of the country, and back then to drive across the border all you had to do was answer a few questions for the border guard about where you were going and what you were going to be doing there. We went to Quebec City on that trip, too.

Among the places we visited were "Man and His World", the Old Fort, and the downtown area.

Now the Musée David M. Stewart at the Vieux Fort, Ile Ste-Hélène, the Old Fort is part of Montreal's historic pre-Revolutionary War history, and the recreations by costumed players has not changed in the last 35 years.

The amusement park "Man and His World" was what was left of Expo 67 on Île Sainte-Hélène. It ran until 1981, but a few of the buildings are still visible today. This one is a ride called the Gyrotron.

Riding the skyway, looking east.

The US Pavilion, a geodesic dome designed by Buckminster Fuller. It is currently an environmental museum called the Montreal Biosphère (and was the setting for a 1978 episode of the original Battlestar Galactica).

This is a still-existing apartment complex called Habitat 67, built for the Expo.

Here's what this city block, the Place Jacques Carties, looks like today: Google Map, Flickr photo gallery

  1. Here's where the last 5 pictures were taken from:

    - the one with the tripod is also taken from Place Jacques Cartier. It's looking the opposite direction from the previous one. The big old building in the background is the town hall.
    - the blurry one is a closer view of the town hall. We see the Canadian flag as well as Montreal's flag
    - this is Marché Bonsecours, one of the oldest buildings of the city. It's in Old Montreal, maybe a 15 minute walk from town hall.
    - pictures of the Montreal skyline were taken on top of Mount Royal, probably at the Belvedere.

Thank you for posting these pictures : I was born in Montreal in 1974.
